Space Model Systems' terrain models are hand-cast and hand-painted representations of the planets and natural satellites in our solar system — and beyond. The masters for these models, usually 8"x8" or 5"x5", are either hand-sculpted or produced by a computer process called rapid prototyping, utilizing data relayed from exploratory spacecraft such as Mars Global Surveyor (the RP work has been provided by Gentle Giant Studios, a company known for their hi-tech object creation services for the motion picture and toy industries).

 Titan is now available! The Huygens probe landing site is painted in icy colors and covered with a FULL layer of transparent orange plexiglas to simulate the dense atmosphere. The plexiglas can be lifted off for viewing the surface. Photo of actual model coming!

New terrain plaques are continually being produced, including hand-sculpted models of Copernicus and Tycho craters on the moon, all of the Apollo lunar landing sites, and the surfaces of Saturn's moon Enceladus and Neptune's moon Triton. Other computer-fabricated Mars terrains will include Noctis Labyrinthus, and Meridiani Planum.

Custom Fabrication: Custom terrains can be created for any body in the solar system, mounted to a plaque base or other display scheme. If your planetarium, museum, or company requires display or award items like those on the plaques above, SMS can produce them. Large terrains (4 feet or bigger), as used in museums and special visual effects filming, can also be sculpted or CNC routed, and would be handled as custom exhibit items.
