The West Valley --The western end of Valles Marineris, looking toward the east, somewhat similar to the foggy view on Page 1. Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data imported into MacDEM, 16-bit Photoshop file imported to Terragen. Custom surface map and atmosphere. ©2004 Rick Sternbach
VM Whack --MacDEM is a pretty interesting program, able to take MOLA elevation data and display it in a variety of ways, like color-coded for altitude, contour lines, etc. A very useful tool, especially for prepping data for use in Terragen. It can show exaggerated vertical height; in the extreme, like 20x, you can just imagine that Noctis Labyrinthus, the cracked semicircle at the western end of Valles Marineris, was one enormous caldera, spewing out all over the southeast and forming Solis Planum. Hmmm... Real, or imaginary? ©2004 Rick Sternbach
